Around the year 30 Vinck and his contemporaries War van Overstraeten, Albert Dasnoy, Albert van Dyck, Henri-Victor Wolvens came to the fore. After all, expressionism and the avant-garde began to wane. Rather, these young people tended to simplicity, to artlessness, to a purely natural representation of people and things, to more intimacy. With 'De Wandelaar' from 1933, Jozef Vinck felt that he had found his own style. On the one hand, influences of expressionism are still present in this work: the brick-warm overall tone of Gust de Smet and the stiffness of Brusselmans. On the other hand, Vinck regarded this canvas as the beginning of his style.
