The daily visit of two turtle doves in the artist's garden inspired DeSmet to this painting. It focuses on the relationship between two lovers. The ability or inability for conversation (whether physical or narrative) is at the heart of any relationship. A black flower always remains a flower formally, but a stormy sky can (over time) also turn out to be pink and colorful. Stief DeSmet (° Deinze, 1973) is a Belgian artist who has exhibited at home and abroad. He developed his own visual language and his own alphabet, using all the resources at his disposal. Painting is just one of the disciplines he practices; he also makes installations, sculptures, and videos. Also very well known of him in public space is "Monument for a Wullok", the sculpture he realized for Beaufort-2018, and was purchased as a permanent work of art by the city of Ostend. DeSmet questions his own position as a contemporary artist vis-a-vis the Leie painters of his youth, who immortalized the landscape in a pastoral manner. Typical of his work are, among other things, the escapist character, in which he withdraws into nature as an artist, and the humor that speaks in many of his works. The work is on permanent display in the Mudel - Museum of Deinze and the Lys Region during the auction period, and can be viewed without obligation during opening hours.
